    CRISTIANO RONALDO

2013 proved to be another goal-drenched year for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star helped himself to 34 of them in the 2012/13 Liga season, a haul beaten only by Lionel Messi’s 45, and scored a hatful more in Europe and for his national team. Always on top form for Real Madrid and Portugal, the flying forward, who won the FIFA World Player award in 2008, is only gaining in stature with Los Merengues, and it came as no surprise when he extended his contract with the club to 2018 and said he was considering staying put for the rest of his career.

    Lionel MESSI

Since winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive FIFA Ballon d’Or the Barcelona ace has showed no sign whatsoever of letting up, topping the La Liga’s scoring charts as his side made off with the 2012/13 league title. Messi has been just as prolific on the international front, finishing the South American qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ as the second-highest marksman. With a third world finals to look forward to next year, the 26-year-old attacking wizard is bearing downing fast on another record, as he seeks to become the highest goalscorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League.

     Franck RIBERY

Franck RIBERYFrustration reigned for Franck Ribery in 2012 as Bayern Munich finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Champions League, but the dangerous France winger did not have to wait long to exorcise the memory. Operating at a different level since those disappointments, he helped his side win all three competitions in 2013, adding the UEFA Super Cup for good measure. Moreover, he has also shone brighter for Les Bleus in recent times, becoming a more convincing and decisive performer on the international stage. Reputed for his mesmerising dribbles, precise shooting ability, and explosive acceleration, those qualities could well keep Bayern on top at home and abroad and inspire France to force their way back into the limelight – just as they convinced UEFA to crown him the Best Player in Europe in 2013.

FC Barcelona – Getafe: The long awaited return

The Camp Nou will host the first leg of the 1/16 round of the Copa del Rey

Leo Messi was named the to team while Dani Alves, Bartra and Xavi will be rested

Gerardo Martino said on Saturday that Leo Messi “has the eye of an assassin” since he returned from Argentina. The FC Barcelona forward, who missed the match against Elche, was given the medical all-clear to play on Tuesday and he could make an appearance this evening in the match between Barça and Getafe in the first leg of the 1/16 round of the Copa del Rey (22.00, TV3 and Antena 3).

Unpredictable starting team

Leo Messi was named to the 18-man team by Martino, while Dani Alves,Bartra and Xavi will be rested. The absence of the latter two (they both started against Elche) means that we’ll have a new starting team this evening. Pinto will be in goal despite Valdés’ recovery and it’s probable that PuyolAdrianoSergi Roberto and Neymar, all of whom were on the bench on Sunday, will be named to the starting team. Messi is expected to get some playing time, but it’s not known if he’ll start the match on the pitch or on the bench.

Rematch after 17 days

Getafe come into the match at the Camp Nou with the same team that pinned Barça back in the opening minutes of the last match of 2013. In that match, Barça fought back from a two-goal deficit to win 2-5. Only 17 days have passed since then.

Improvements made to the Camp Nou

Several changes have been made to the facilities surrounding the Camp Nou, including a redesigned main entrance, brand new ticket offices and adapatations for wheelchair users

The first phase of work on remodelling access 14 to the Camp Nou, which from now on will be the main entrance to the stadium, is almost complete.
Once the work is over, on January 30, the Camp Nou will have a new 22 metre wide entrance leading into a large public square. One of the most important benefits is that pedestrians and vehicles will no longer be using the same entrance, thus improving safety of visitors.
There is also a new overhead walkway connecting the Auditori 1899 and the Social Area Social with the Palau Blaugrana Boulevard, the site of the commercial area from which visitors enter the Camp Nou Experience and the new FCBotiga Megastore, the biggest football club store in the world. The whole area has also been adapted for the disabled and people with reduced mobility through the inclusion of an elevator that rises to the upper level.
The new entrance to the stadium is via Carrer Arístides Maillol, where the old ticket offices are to be demolished and replaced with a bar and a connection to the social area, new public toilets and a Travel Agent.

New ticket offices

One of the most important changes will be the new FC Barcelona ticket offices. The twelve old ones, which had become obsolete, are to be completely demolished and replaced with sixteen modern offices, all of which are also adapted for use by the disabled.
The new access 14 and the walkway are to become fully operative on February 15. The six months of work on these major improvements to the experience of visiting the Camp Nou has cost 1.5 million euros.
The Argentinian insists that his team should remain fully focussed on Getafe and take the last 70 minutes of the most recent encounter with the same side as a reference

He has spoken to Messi, who is feeling better than ever after taking part in training sessions this week

He also confirmed that José Manuel Pinto will be the keeper for cup matches, and that Bartra, Xavi and Alves have been dropped as precautionary measures
On the day before the first leg of the cup tie with Getafe, Gerardo Tata Martino has spoken to the press about its importance. “We have to focus on this match” he said. “There is no room for error in the Copa del Rey. We want to stay in the cup and so we have to win. We still have Thursday and Friday to worry about Atlético Madrid”.
Martino pointed out that everyone remembers what happened when they recently met Getafe in the league, and went 2-0 down in the first quarter of an hour. “We have to play like we did for the last seventy minutes and make sure there are no lapses in our concentration”, he insisted.
“From here on comes the most difficult part of the season. We will try to keep things the same and maintain our high standard of football”.

One in and two out

One of the biggest attractions of the match will be the return of Leo Messi from a 58-day absence through injury. "I have spoken to Leo and he says he’s ready to play” said Martino. “He’s done his training and now what he has to do is play a match … But with injuries, you first have to get over them physically, and then you have to get over them mentally”.
I have spoken to Leo and he says he’s ready to play. He’s done his training and now what he has to do is play a match
Martino also spoke about the injuries to Marc Bartra, Xavi Hernández and Dani Alves. On Bartra, the news is that “he got hurt but tests didn’t detect anything wrong, but it’s best not to risk things. Instinct tells me that we should be cautious. It’s a similar thing with Xavi, with the soleus trouble he’s been having since last season.” And as for Alves, “I haven’t spoken to him, but he hasn’t looked right to me since he came back with flu. He needs a few more training sessions”.
One player who will certainly be appearing against Getafe is goalkeeper José Manuel Pinto, who Martino has confirmed will be the first choice goalkeeper for Copa del Rey matches this season.
